Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 16 February 2021 (MOREL) – Marta Bassino (ITA) is the toast of Cortina after delivering Italy their longed-for first gold medal, winning the women’s parallel giant slalom on Tuesday. Bassino finished joint-first alongside Austria’s Katharina Liensberger, who also takes gold.
The home hero, the winner of four World Cup giant slalom races already this season, had the same combined time on the clock as all three opponents in her two-legged quarter-final, semi-final and final but emerged victorious in the preceding rounds having been quicker in the crucial second runs.
The 2013 and 2017 giant slalom world champion Tessa Worley (FRA) showed she is edging back to her very best form by grabbing bronze. The Frenchwoman beat Paula Moltzan in the small final, after the USA skier defeated the morning’s fastest qualifier, Wendy Holdener (SUI), in the quarter-finals.
In the men’s event, Mathieu Faivre (FRA) defeated Filip Zubcic (CRO) in the final to secure France’s first gold medal of the championships.
Faivre had skied in a smooth, balanced fashion all day on a parallel giant slalom course on which the red track proved faster than the blue.
With his technique flawless in the second run, the Frenchman finished 0.48 seconds ahead.
In the small final, Loic Meillard (SUI) defeated Alexander Schmid (GER), who fell on the second run, to get the bronze medal.
