Wienna, 15 December 2010 (MOREL)- On January 13th, 2011 the European Prize Coudenhove-Kalergi 2010 will be presented to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. The Prize is awarded biannually to leading personalities for their extraordinary commitment in the European unification process. In the explanatory memorandum for the award reference is made to Angela Merkel’s strong engagement and her balancing interventions in the contractual advancement of the treaty of the European Union. Her decisive contribution to secure the future of the European project is particularly emphasised.   Angela Merkel is the second German head of government who receives this award.  This underlines the importance and commitment of the largest EU member to follow the Pan-Europa idea. Among the 18 prize-winners Angela Merkel is the second female after the Latvian president Veira Vike-Freiberga. A complete award list is on the web at the address www.european-society-coudenhove-kalergi.org.   The Europa Prize goes back to Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, diplomat, philosopher and publisher whose family had roots in several European countries. He is considered as the founder of the modern idea of democratic Europe. He was substantially engaged in founding the European Council in Strasbourg.(end)
