Norway’s Foss-Solevaag takes men’s slalom gold

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Sunday 21 February 2021 – The Cortina 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships came to a conclusion in fine style on Sunday, with Norway’s Sebastian Foss-Solevaag taking gold in the men’s slalom. The 29-year-old showed complete mastery of both the steep upper section of the piste and the softer, lower run-in to secure Norway’s first world championship slalom gold since 1997.
He saw off the challenge of two young prospects and his own teammate in order to do it. Austria have enjoyed a fantastic championships, and Adrian Pertl (AUT), 24, put in a career-best performance to get silver. Pertl, in bib No.8, had been fastest on the first run and finished just 0.21 seconds behind overall.
Henrik Kristoffersen (NOR), meanwhile, put in a trademark late charge for the medals, showing all his skill on the softer snow to secure bronze. This pushed local hero Alex Vinatzer (ITA), who had been second-fastest on the first run, into fourth place. Despite the frustration, the 21-year-old former junior world champion showed his huge future potential with a gutsy ski under pressure. Several top contenders, including Loic Meillard (SUI) and Marco Schwarz (AUT), did not finish on a tough and technical course.
The next FIS Alpine World Ski Championships will be help in Courchevel, France in 2023.
